Both the rider and horse face in the same direction as they move horizontally through the painting. The saddle is detailed with a central lotus bloom and the horse mane is made of up very fine linework. e lotus is the sacred Buddhists flower and it symbolizes truth, fertility, and purity. Each line is expertly executed with deft precision and attention to detail. A fine example of Tao Shu calligraphy form is written in the top left corner followed by two red artist seals. A single line of calligraphy is noted on the right-hand edge followed by two more red seals. Tsao Shu calligraphers simplify the left side of each character and give more space and emphasis to the right side. Tsau Shu calligraphers write swiftly and use many sudden turns and dramatic movements. This style of characters looks more like abstract painting than writing. The painting is expertly mounted onto a robust silk matte and scroll combination. PROVENANCE: From the heirloom collections of Wu Guozhen (吳國楨; October 21, 1903-June 6, 1984) was a Chinese political figure and historian, government official who served as mayor of Hankow (1932-1938), mayor of Chung-king (1939-1941), political vice minister of foreign affairs (1943-45), mayor of Shanghai (1946-1948), and governor of Taiwan (1950-1952) and the former Chairman of Taiwan Provincial Government. He resigned in 1953 and went to the United States, charging that Taiwan was becoming a police state.K.C. Wu lived in the United States where he served as professor of Chinese history at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia. He was born in the Aisin Gioro clan, the imperial clan of the Qing dynasty. Pujie was the younger brother of Puyi, the last Emperor of China. After the fall of the Qing dynasty, Pujie went to Japan, where he was educated and married to Hiro Saga, a Japanese noblewoman. In 1937, he moved to Manchukuo, where his brother ruled as Emperor under varying degrees of Japanese control during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945). After the war ended, Pujie was captured by Soviet forces, held in Soviet prison camps for five years, and then extradited back to the People's Republic of China, where he was incarcerated for about 10 years in the Fushun War Criminals Management Centre. He was later pardoned and released from prison by the Chinese government, after which he joined the Communist Party and served in a number of positions in the party until his death in 1994.
