Scroll Height: 66 3/8" Width: 22 1/2" Painting Height: 31 1/4" Width: 15 5/8" Xu Cao (徐操; 1899-1961) & Chen Yungao (陳雲誥; October 26, 1877-January 5, 1965) Chinese traditional scroll painting and calligraphy, ink and color on paper laid to silk, hanging scroll. Signed.Meticulous Painting of a consort of imperial guard’s escorting the emperor through rugged foothills by Xu Cao (徐操; 1899-1961). Upper section features semi-cursive calligraphic writing in ten evenly spaced columns by Chen Yungao (1877-1965). Lower section depicts a bustling convoy of heavily armored guards protecting the emperor on his arduous journey through the craggy mountainside. Pine and cherry blossom trees litter the landscape with outbreaks of color. This painting carries the characteristics of the Northern literati being that it is more realistic and pigmented in bright colors. A technique known as Gongbi which translates to mean tidy. A keen eye is needed to paint with this level of detail and an intimate knowledge of the landscape must be known to capture the inner beauty of nature. The Calligraphic markings are painted in an elegant manner which carries over into the artwork, resulting in a unified presence. Two red seals are present, with one in the upper section and the other in the lower.
