Scroll Height: 80 1/2" Width: 31 3/4" Painting Height: 51 3/4" Width: 21 1/8" Fu Shan (傅山; 1607-1684) Qing Dynasty Chinese traditional Calligraphy scroll, ink on paper laid to silk, hanging scrolls. With normal script characters on pale-creme paper, with seal mark. Laid on creme silk border.Amazing level of accuracy and literacy on display throughout this magnificent piece of historical literature, by Fu Shan (1607-1684). Renowned calligrapher and art philosopher during the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties. Fu Shan was knowledgeable in poetry, literature, calligraphy and painting. Hundreds of evenly thick lines make up this clerical script calligraphic piece of writing. The most noteworthy feature of Li Shu is its flat appearance, which is wider than other styles. The most obvious feature of Li Shu is the use of parallel strokes. The strokes look like waves or the wagging tails of wild goose, so calligraphers call them “Goose Tail” strokes. Mounted on a pale creme scroll. PROVENANCE: From the heirloom collections of Wu Guozhen (吳國楨; October 21, 1903-June 6, 1984) was a Chinese political figure and historian, government official who served as mayor of Hankow (1932-1938), mayor of Chung-king (1939-1941), political vice minister of foreign affairs (1943-45), mayor of Shanghai (1946-1948), and governor of Taiwan (1950-1952) and the former Chairman of Taiwan Provincial Government. He resigned in 1953 and went to the United States, charging that Taiwan was becoming a police state.K.C. Wu lived in the United States where he served as professor of Chinese history at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia. During his time in the United States, he wrote various works, including a detailed analysis on Chinese culture in the context of mythology and early history in his book The Chinese Heritage.Wu is remembered mainly for his vital role in the formation of a liberal modern Taiwan and his anti-communist beliefs typical of a member of Kuomintang, but he is also remembered for his brave anti-Kuomintang rhetoric and turbulent disagreements with the more Russian-styled second President of Taiwan. The Collections of Wu Guozhen (吳國楨) presented and offered up to auctions ON DAY-1: from Lot-97 through Lot-127, continued from Lot-219 through Lot-255. ON DAY-2: from Lot-354 through Lot-377, continued from Lot-451 through Lot-480.LOT NOTES: Fu Shan (傅山, 1607-1684) a native of Yangqu (陽曲) in Shanxi (山西), was a well-known calligrapher and art theorist during the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties.Fu Shan was well versed in poetry, literature, calligraphy and painting. He was unparalleled among the scholars in the early Qing Dynasty in terms of the broadness and achievement of his knowledge. For 1,300 years, Chinese calligraphy was based on the elegant art of Wang Xizhi (王羲之, 303-361). But the seventeenth-century emergence of a style modeled on the rough, broken epigraphs of ancient bronzes and stone artifacts brought a revolution in calligraphic taste. By the eighteenth century, this led to the formation of the stele school (碑派, 碑學) of calligraphy, which continues to shape Chinese calligraphy today. Fu Shan was a dominant force in this school. Because his work spans the late Ming-early Qing divide, it is an ideal prism through which to view the transformation in calligraphy. Fu Shan was also a reputed doctor. Though his life story was not recorded in the official history, and only a few sketches in the annals of county and prefecture, his reputation was heard in Shanxi and even the whole country, shining brilliantly in later generations.
