CHINE, XVIIIe siècleDeux personnages en ivoire* sculpté impérial représentant l’empereur et sa concubineFinement représentés de plein pieds, l’empereur en habits de chasse et vêtu d’une robe impériale richement sculptée en relief de dragons et perles sacrée. Les extrémités des manches reprenant un décor similaire et la partie basse ornée de flots tumultueux frappant contre des rochers. Il porte un chapeau impérial reprenant un décor similaire à sa robe et est paré d’un collier de perles dont il tient une boule de jade de sa main gauche. L’expression fière et légèrement souriante, son visage est orné d’une moustache et d’une barbe finement rendue, ses longs cheveux rassemblés en une tresse délicatement ciselée. La concubine est vêtue d’une armure a riche décor de phénix et est parée d’un casque orné de plumes au sommet. Elle tient un rouleau dans sa main droite, sa main gauche repose sur le pommeau de son épée, un foulard aux plis d’une finesse et d’un réalisme époustouflant est noué autour de son cou, l’ensemble de ses vêtements sont clairement d’inspiration européenne. Chacune des figures porte un carquois remplis de flèches dans le dos et sont donc en parade pour une chasse. La présente sculpture représentant une concubine est en relation directe avec le portrait de la concubine Ouïgoure prénommée Xian Fei (Concubine parfumée) ou de son vrai nom Iparhan, petite fille d’Abakh Khoja, chef islamique du 17e siècle dans la région du Xinjiang. La légende raconte qu’elle fut courtisée par l’empereur Qianlong et fit partie de son harem mais lui résistât toujours si bien qu’elle fut empoisonnée. Un portrait maintenant conservé dans les collections du Musée du Palais à Pékin et peint par le célèbre frère Jésuite Italien Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766) missionnaire et peintre à la cour impériale de Chine représente la jeune Xian Fei en armure (voir illustration) On y retrouve une posture identique, le casque terminé en plumes recourbées et perché d’un phénix ainsi que le décor de rinceaux, le foulard délicatement noué autour de son cou, ainsi que l’expression raffinée du visage qui ont directement inspiré l’artiste sculpteur de cet ivoire. La sculpture de l’empereur Qianlong est à rapprocher d’un portrait peint par Jean Denis Attiret (1702-1768) lui aussi frère Jésuite Français, missionnaire et peintre de renom dans la Chine impériale (voir illustration) maintenant dans les collections du Musée Guimet à Paris (Numéro d’inventaire MG26504). Malgré qu’il ne soit pas possible d’établir une relation aussi frappante que pour son pendant avec la peinture de Castiglione, on trouvera des similitudes entre cette peinture et la présente sculpture notamment le chapeau impérial ainsi que les traits de visage, l’expression, la barbe et moustache ainsi que la posture caractéristique de l’empereur qui menât la dynastie des Qing à son apogée. Pour une sortie de l’UE, un CITES de ré-export sera nécessaire, celui-ci étant à la charge du futur acquéreur.A pair of imperial ivory carvings of emperor and concubine China, 18th century, Qianlong period Finely modelled both standing, the emperor dressed for hunting is wearing a typical imperial robe fully covered with dragons in pursuit of the flaming pearl. The lower extremity adorned with waves and rocks, he is wearing a hat with further dragons carving, a beads and jade necklace at his neck which he holds with his left hand. The concubine proudly standing wearing a full body armor with an intricately carved helmet surmounted with phoenix and feathers. She holds a scroll in her right hand while her left-hand rests on her sword’s knob. She wears a delicately rendered neck scarf and her overall dressing style is clearly of European inspiration. Each of both figures is holding quiver and arrows and they appear to be parading during a hunt. The present concubine is directly related to the portrait of the Uighur concubine named Xian Fei (the fragrant concubine) also called Iparhan, granddaughter of Abakh Khoja, a 17th century Islamic leader in the Xinjiang region. Legend has it that she was courted by the Qianlong Emperor and was taken his harem but kept resisting him so she was poisoned. A portrait now kept in the collections of the Palace Museum in Beijing and painted by the famous Italian Jesuit brother Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766) missionary and painter in the imperial court of China represents the young Xian Fei in armor (see illustration) in similar posture, the helmet surmounted with curved feathers and terminated with a phoenix as well as the foliage decor, the scarf delicately tied around his neck and the refined expression of the face directly inspired the artist sculptor of this ivory.The Qianlong emperor’s sculpture can be compared to a portrait painted by Jean Denis Attiret (1702-1768) French and also a Jesuit brother, missionary and famous painter in Imperial China (see illustration) now in the collections of the Guimet Museum in Paris (inventory number MG26504). Although it is not possible to establish such a striking relation as its counterpart with the painting of Castiglione, we find similarities between this painting and the present sculpture including the imperial hat and facial features, the expression , the beard and mustache and the characteristic posture of the emperor who led the Qing dynasty at its peak.中國 十八世紀 象牙雕乾隆香妃立像作品選用的乾隆與香妃的形象都有據可證，如同北京故宮館藏之傳教士Jesuit brother Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766)所繪的武裝香妃肖像，與法國吉美博物館所藏之Jean Denis Attiret (1702-1768)所繪的乾隆肖像。雖然沒有直接的依據，但如此相似的形象刻畫，可看出此對象牙雕必受一定的影像。66xx
