Influential French writer (1821–1867) best known for his highly imaginative and experimental verse, including the seminal 1857 collection Les Fleurs du Mal. ALS in French, signed “C. B.,” one page, 5 x 8, no date but annotated "1844" in pencil, and transcribed in Correspondance de Baudelaire (published by Gallimard in 1973), which places it circa July–September 1844. Letter to his mother, Madame Aupick, in full (translated): "I apologize for not going to your house today. I had dinner with someone from La Revue. Tomorrow at Madame Lenglet's place, the day after tomorrow at home when you leave Mr. Ancelle's place." Addressed on the reverse in Baudelaire's hand to "Madame Aupick, Place Vendome." In very good to fine condition, with scattered light creasing, and a heavier diagonal crease near the bottom edge; bears the collection stamp of Jean-Louis Debauve to the reverse.In 1827, Baudelaire's widowed mother married Lieutenant Colonel Jacques Aupick, which strained their relationship for years to come. A chief point of contention was Baudelaire's extravagant spending, and in 1844 the family had a court appoint Narcisse Ancelle, who is mentioned here, as a legal advisor to oversee the young man's funds. Baudelaire and Ancelle were often at odds, though he expresses no ill will toward him in the present letter. A desirable piece of family correspondence from the renowned French writer.Format: ALS
