8th-9th century AD. A group of Silk Road Byzantine style gold foil appliqués, each a repoussé facing mask with ribbed hair, lentoid eyes, crescent brow and nose, small lips, pierced for attachment. Cf. Marshall, F.H. Catalogue of the Jewellery, Greek, Etruscan and Roman, in the Department of Antiquities, British Museum, London, 1911, pl.LXX. 3.40 grams total, 17mm each (1/2").
