A framed polychrome ukiyo-e woodblock print by the artist Kitagama Utamaro and depicting a mother suckling her infant child, with reflecting mirror to side; held in a glazed red, gold and black lacquered 'Japanese' frame. 780 grams, frame 36.5 x 29.5cm (14 1/4 x 11 1/2"). Property of an Essex collector; acquired UK art market. Kitagama Utamaro (1753-1806 AD) is still today one of the most highly regarded print artists; in 1804 however, he was arrested and chained for fifty days for making illegal prints. His works became known in Europe in the 19th century and was influential for some of the impressionist artists of the day. [No Reserve] Fine condition.
