A framed polychrome ukiyo-e woodblock print by the artist Kitagama Utamaro and depicting a mother suckling her infant child, with reflecting mirror to side; held in a glazed red, gold and black lacquered 'Japanese' frame. 780 grams, frame 36.5 x 29.5cm (14 1/4 x 11 1/2"). Property of an Essex collector; acquired UK art market. Kitagama Utamaro (1753-1806 AD) is still today one of the most highly regarded print artists; in 1804 however, he was arrested and chained for fifty days for making illegal prints.
