Dickins, Frederick Victor, The Story of Shi?ten Dôji, offprint from Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland, new series, vol.17, no.1 (January 1885); red cloth binding, 28pp., with four double-page coloured plates illustrating the story; with engraved bookplate of 'CASM'. 181 grams, 22 x 14.3cm (8 3/4 x 5 1/2"). Property of an Essex collector; acquired UK art market. Dickins (1838-1915) was a surgeon, barrister and orientalist who travelled to Japan on HMS Coromandel in 1863 and ran the medical facilities in Yokhama for three years; after returning to England, he went back to Japan in 1871 as a barrister and worked as a pioneer on Japanese studies before returning to England and the University of London in 1879. He was made CBE in 1901 and published many works on Japanese culture and literature; his collected works were considered important enough to be assembled and published in 1999 and again, in seven volumes, in 2001.
