Dickins (1838-1915) was a surgeon, barrister and orientalist who travelled to Japan on HMS Coromandel in 1863 and ran the medical facilities in Yokhama for three years; after returning to England, he went back to Japan in 1871 as a barrister and worked as a pioneer on Japanese studies before returning to England and the University of London in 1879. He was made CBE in 1901 and published many works on Japanese culture and literature; his collected works were considered important enough to be assembled and published in 1999 and again, in seven volumes, in 2001.
