A substantial bronze ceremonial axe comprising a handle formed as a dragon's head with scales and sharp teeth, upon its head a bird protome; above this two wrathful deity masks and a Ganesh mask, each with necklace and adjoining headdresses, masks separated by coiled snakes; from this a smaller shank with another two wrathful deity masks and a Ganesh mask, with necklaces, snakes and headdresses; to the finial a single wrathful deity mask with tall headdress decorated with skulls; from the dragon's mouth extends the crescent-shaped blade. 2.8 kg, 47cm (18 1/2"). Property of a North London gentleman; formerly in a 1920s private collection. Fine condition.
