6th century AD. A bronze triangular die with raised motif of entwined horse-headed serpents within a border of pellets, band of pellets to each body. Cf. Hammond, B. British Artefacts vol.1 - Early Anglo-Saxon, Witham, 2009, item 1.5.3.1-c. 2.54 grams, 31mm (1 1/4"). Property of a gentleman; acquired in the 1970s. Dies of this sort were used for the production of gold or silver sheet appliqués. The triangular profile is especially associated with drinking horns. Very fine condition.
