6th century AD. A bronze chape fitting from a scabbard comprising a facing male mask with striated hair flanked by two opposed bird-heads, strap and pad below. Cf. Menghin, W. Das Schwert im Frühen Mittelalter, Stuttgart, 1983, map 18 for distribution of types. 7.71 grams, 35mm (1 1/2"). Found near Danethorpe, Nottinghamshire, UK. Fine condition.
