Description
Translation provided by Youdao
Late 14th-early 15th century AD. A silver dagger chape with diamond section tapering to a rounded point, engraved to one side with two 'a's in Blackletter script and diamond shapes, cross-hatching in the field. 8.7 grams, 42mm (1 3/4"). Formerly in the R. Dupuis collection of Medieval Art, Lillers, France. This is a superb medieval silver scabbard chape, beautifully engraved with the letters 'a' & 'a' in Blackletter script, the field having cross-hatching. The shape of the chape would suggest a rondel with an armour-piercing diamond section point. Rondels were fashionable with the English, especially during the period of the Hundred Years War with France. It would have certainly been a very prestigious piece, with silver fittings on a quality leather scabbard. Certainly a piece suitable for a knight or nobleman, whether French or English we shall never know. Very fine condition.
