1688 AD. Obv: James II riding right with IACOBVS II D G MAG BRI FRAN ET HB REX legend. Rev: cruciform arms linked by chains with VAL 24 PART REAL HISPAN legend. KM# Tn 5.4. See Portable Antiquities Scheme, reference LON-D20457 (this token, with copy of database extract"). 9.07 grams . Found tidal foreshore, river Thames, London, 2013. These pewter (lead/tin alloy) tokens were made for use in the reign of James II (circa 1688) for use on American colonial plantations and were issued current at 1/24th of a Spanish real; in August 1688 John Holt, agent for a number of tin mines, petitioned the King for the right to produce 'tin' tokens for use in the American plantations; several have been discovered in the UK suggesting that they might also have seen unofficial usage here, perhaps similar to the 'Gunmoney' coinage of the same period used in Ireland. Very fine. Scarce.
