TLS, one page, 7.75 x 10.25, Assistant Secretary of the Navy letterhead, July 17, 1920. Letter to Frank Waters at Sailors' Snug Harbor on Staten Island, in part: "I cannot tell you how pleased I was to get your letter and particularly to learn from you that the Salts at Sailors Snug Harbor are pleased at my nomination. I am really more pleased at feeling I have won your good will than at any other news which might come in the mail. Ever since I was a youngster those who went down to the sea, when sailing was something more than running engines and shoveling coal, have been objects of my particular admiration and veneration; and the nice things you have to say made me very proud. I note that in spite of the years that have gone by they simply could not keep you out of the war, which is the real Navy spirit. Many thanks for the poems which you inclose. Your verses on the American Navy have the real tang of salt air in them." In very good condition, with light overall creasing, and dampstaining to the upper left corner and right side (touching, but not adversely affecting, the signature).Format: TLS
