With an illegible signature. The devotion to Madonna of the Soterraña has been especially documented in Mexico since the mid 18th Century. José Joaquín Flores Moreno, who was Fiscal Provider of the Archbishopric of Mexico, granted the license for the printing of a Novena to that image in 1751. The composition of Saint Gertrudis is similar to the work of the same theme by Juan Tinoco preserved in a private collection. The San Antonio Museum of Art preserves a copper by José de Páez representing Saint John Nepomuceno, with a composition similar to that of this canvas.
