The work of that artist, identified sometimes with Giuseppe di Guido or with Maestro di Bovino, is characterized by combining caravaggesque tenebrism with a bold and original framing, 'in shortcuts', as here, where he shows the soldiers in the foreground and the sacred episode at an angle, behind them.
