Felt-lined case, embossed within J. SOMMER FRERES, 13 & 15 PASSAGE DES PRINCES, PARIS, MEDAILLES D'OR 1876 & 1889, AUX CARRIERES D'ECUME, and other marks. Brass clasp. Founded in 1860 (as Viney, Sommer et Hamm), J. Sommer produced hand carved pipes until approximately 1938. Meerschaum (German, "sea foam") is made from the mineral sepiolite.
