原配紫檀砚匣砚作长方平板样，大美不琢，素雅无工，老坑质地细腻纯净，原配紫檀砚匣。端溪老坑又称为下岩、水岩，历史上曾被作为“皇岩”，有规定的数量进贡朝廷。关于老坑自开坑采石后，以何时所采得的砚石为佳，历来古人各有说法。正如清代计楠所说：“昔人论研多矣。所见异辞、所闻异辞者，何也？盖以研坑之出，有古今之不同、上下之各别。一代有一代之优劣，一时有一时之好尚。古不必尽胜于今，今不必远逊乎古也”
