Commodore (1750 - 1829) of the United States Navy who distinguished himself in the Quasi-War with France and later supervised the construction of the Washington Navy Yard. LS signed ÂTho:s Tingey, one page, 8.25 x 13.5, January 14, 1814. Letter of recommendation to the President and Directors of the Metropolis Bank of Washington, in part: "We Know Owen McCurthis several years past as a resident at the navy yard and we know Him to be a sober honest and industrious young man. He has been a considerable time in the State's employ as a purser steward and while in that Station he has Discharg'd his duty with honesty We believe him to me a man that any degree of confidence can be Plac'd in him." Signed at the conclusion by Thomas Tingey and two others. In very good condition, with soiling and toning, and professional restoration to areas of paper loss.Format: LS
