Stereoscopic machine in wood, brass; original photo show inside. From the dawn of visual entertainment, and once a common sight in the penny-arcades and Nickelodeons of the 1890s to the 1930s. A hard wood cabinet with mechanical override crank and electrified internals powers a timed 'flip book' style show of a young female coquette awaking from slumber. A penny operates the weighted mechanism, and an electric light provides for viewing the 3-D, stereoscopic show. The tame- by today's standards -photos are copyrighted Ex Sup Co, 1921. Such 'racy' mutoscope shows caused a minor scandal when displayed for public consumption in San Francisco (where many American mutoscope manufacturers were based) and represent an extraordinary piece of Late American West history and novelty. Eagle talon-styled claw feet clutch crystal balls; brass cherub relief and name plate; decorative mirror. The included LITTLE ACCIDENT signage (which slides into the display placard for alternating titles) is a modern reproduction of the style, unrelated to the included peep-show stereo prints. Includes key for cabinet, crank for mechanism, bulb. Functions as expected when plugged in and an American penny is deposited. Issued: c. 1920s Dimensions: 71"H x 17.5"W x 17"D Manufacturer: Whas.
