Biography (source: Askart): Henri Baptiste Lebasque studied portrait painting at L'Ecole des Beaux Arts under Leon Bonnat, and exhibited at the Paris Salons. However, in 1903, with his friend Henri Matisse, Lebasque became a founder of the Salon d'Automne, an alternative to the conservative salons. There, he exhibited alongside Fauvist painters including his close friends Henri Matisse and Henri Manguin. His work is sometimes said to reflect the flatness of shape and color of Fauvism while employing a more fluid presentation. In later life, Lebasque worked closely with his friend and neighbor Pierre Bonnard. In 1957, Musee des Ponchettes in Nice presented the first retrospective of his works.
