CA. 200 – 300 AD. Rare and very large Roman legionary spearhead of Pilum type with conical, socketed shaft. The Republican Roman pilum was replaced by a similar weapon called a spiculum, according to Vegetius who wrote De Re Militari in the late 4th or early 5th century AD. The spiculum may have been an adaptation of the Roman throwing spear for use in hand-to-hand combat under the influence of the Germanic soldiers serving in the legions. Expertly cleaned and conserved to Museum quality. Size: 350mm( 13.77in) ; 175 grams. Provenance: Property of a professional collector from London, purchased on the European art market in the 1980s. All Items sold by Pax Romana Auctions come with a professional Certificate of Authenticity
