Ca. 618 – 907 AD This is a very impressive Ancient Terracotta Chinese Tang Dynasty Statue of Lokapala guardian / victorious warrior standing on a beast. Dressed in a complete set of armour and with a helmet on its head, this guardian stands on a beast with both feet, one of which is on the animal's head. Parts of the clothing flare outwards, especially the skirt hanging out from underneath the armour. An extremely expressively designed facial expression with large and accentuated alert eyes which are further emphasised by the thick, upwardly curving eyebrows. The upper arms also stick out from under very expressive masks in the shape of magical creatures. The stag is lying on a pedestal and has antlers. Repair to legs and arms.
