2nd century AD. A matched pair of gold earrings, each a disc cell with inset garnet cabochon and openwork petals surrounding, scrolled lower bar with three dangles, each with a pearl and garnet bead. Cf. Ruseva-Slokoska, L. Roman Jewellery, Sofia, 1991, item 50 for type. 9.33 grams total, 33mm (1 1/4"). Property of a UK gentleman; acquired from a London gallery in the late 1980s; formerly from a private European collection, formed in the 1960s and 1970s. [2]
