10th-late 7th century BC. A carved jasper Neo-Assyrian cylinder seal with La?mu before the Marduk-symbol; facing left the god La?mu as a naked muscular bearded man, kneeling with a turban-like headgear and curly-haired head (La?mu = 'Hairy'), a protective and beneficent deity, in the Neo-Assyrian Period associated with the God Marduk, kneeling on his left knee in front of a three-legged shaft with a tasselled triangular head, the spade-symbol (MAR / marru) of Marduk, the chief god of Babylon; above it a big ball in a circle, his spade can be used as an indication of his origins as an agricultural deity, on the left of the Marduk-symbol is a highly elaborate 'stylised tree' in the form of a stylised palm with a trunk consisting of seven spherical segments, which accumulates laterally in leaflets, at the top a large ball in two circles, of which laterally four phallus-like rays point upwards, between La?mu and the Marduk-symbol above a crescent with rays going up, between La?mu and the 'stylised tree' the 'ball-and-staff'-symbol; fourteen bullets appear as a stand line, framed by two lines above and below. Above, the seal image is bounded by a simple line; plastic style, strong use of the ball drill; accompanied by a museum-quality impression. For the god La?mu see J. Black; A. Green, Gods, Demons and Symbols of Ancient Mesopotamia. An Illustrated Dictionary, London, 1992, p. 115a; for the spade-symbol of the god Marduk see ibid., p.168b; for the 'stylised tree' see ibid., p.170-171. 6.26 grams, 26mm (1"). Property of a London lady, part of her family's Swiss collection; formerly acquired in the 1980s. [No Reserve]
