6th century AD. A silver-gilt S-shaped plate brooch with central band of billets, hooked beak to each end with garnet cloison eyes, pin-lug and catch to the reverse. Cf. Heynowski, R. Bestimmungsbuch Archaeologie: Fibeln, Munich, 2012, item 3.26.17 for type. 12.7 grams, 38mm (1 1/2"). Property of a gentleman; acquired in the late 1960s-early 1970s.
