6th-7th century AD. A bronze finial plaque formed as a facing male mask with lentoid eyes and a beast-head cap, the moustache developing to flanking bird-heads; attachment loops and pin to the reverse. See West, S. A Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Finds From Suffolk, East Anglian Archaeology 84, Ipswich, 1998. 5.5 grams, 21mm (1"). From an old North Country collection; formed between 1970-2000. The mount is the finial from a cruciform brooch of the more elaborate type - Group V - shown in West (1998) p.311, item 14. The mask with staring eyes and flanking birds of prey has been linked to the cult of the god Woden who is the founder of most Anglo-Saxon dynasties.
