13th-14th century AD. A silver annular brooch with sword-shaped pin, incised apotropaic legend to the hoop 'AGLA' with hatching between to one face; being an abbreviation for a charm against fever during the Middle Ages, from the Hebrew 'Ata gibor le'olam Adonai' ('You are mighty forever, O Lord'"). See Egan, G. & Pritchard, F. Dress Accessories 1150-1450, London, 2002. 9.9 grams, 33.28mm (1 1/4"). From a private UK collector; previously the property of an East Anglian collector; acquired in Europe in the late 1940s. 'AGLA' is an abbreviation for a popular charm against fever during the Middle Ages, based on the Hebrew expression 'Ata gibor le'olam Adonai' ('You are mighty forever, O Lord'"). The Hebrew phrase is best known from the Amidah prayer, in which it is the second blessing. [No Reserve]
