Silver soldini minted in Venice circulated freely in England in medieval times and at least until the 1530s, despite attempts to outlaw them, to provide small change and are often known as 'Galley Halfpennies', believed to derive from them being brought to England on Venetian galley ships and offloaded in the London docks.
