Early 17th century gilt bronze Avalokiteshvara sitting on a high double lotus dhyanasana, both hands representing vitarka mudra and grasping an utpala lotus stalk meandering upwards along the arms to the shoulders, carrying the flowers, vase Kalasa and he peacock. The deity dressed in a dhoti and a loose shawl over the shoulders, adorned with sumptuous ornamental jewelry including earrings, beaded necklaces, bracelets, armbands and anklets, the serene expression accentuated with a subtle benign smile, crowned with a figure of Buddha Amitabha in front of a neatly tied knot, 13 3/4" h. Provenance: Private collection of an important estate, Newport, Rhode Island.
