Description

The clay pottery has two flared spouts on the side and one high spout on the center top. There is a wide, low pedestal base. There appears to have been a repair on one of the flared spouts and some of the glaze color has flaked off revealing the grey clay base color. The designs on the pottery are geometric designs with small spaced, closed circles. The designs are faded and were a black or dark brown color at one time. The background color of the pottery appears to have been an orange-red which can be seen on the interior of one of the flared spouts. I believe the pottery is in the style of the Moche culture of Peru; Moche artists used only three colors on their pottery - cream, red-brown or red-orange and black; your pottery is not ancient pottery, but a reproduction. The Moche civilization flourished along the northern coast and valleys of ancient Peru between 1 B.C. and 800 B.C. Fine pottery vessels were usually made using molds, but each was individually and distinctly decorated, typically using cream, reds, oranges and black or brown. Perhaps the most famous vessels are the highly realistic stirrup-spouted pots. Pottery shapes and decorations did evolve over time and became more and more elaborate. The Moche were gifted potters and metalworkers. On Moche pottery, ceramic effigy figures are also common.Circa Early to Mid 20th Century. Height 4 inches Length 9.25Attributed to an Unknown Craftsman i the Style of the Moche Culture of Peru
