汤芗铭（1883-1975），字铸新，汤聘莘次子，湖北浠水人。清光绪二十九年（1903）毕业于武昌文普通学堂，同年参加湖北乡试中举人，立誓以武力振兴中华，于是放弃入京会试，考入福建船政学堂，曾在袁世凯麾下效力。清宣统元年（1909）结束留学生涯返回祖国，历任镜清舰机长、南琛舰长，为重建中国海军作出贡献。毛泽东曾评价：汤芗铭是中华民国的缔造者之一。如果没有汤芗铭的海军，武昌首义就有可能流产。
