Description

Johann Sperl, 1840 Buch near Fürth - 1914 Bad AiblingThe Jenbach near Bad Feilnbach with a View of the Wendelsteingruppe Oil on canvas. 48.2 x 35.7 cm. Relined. Restored. Framed. ''Of even greater charm is a small, spring-fresh mountain landscape [...] from the year 1878, at which time Sperl was living with Leibl in this area. Here we see the return of the gnarled willow, recognisable from Leibl's painting of the 'Hunter', and which was apparently painted in by Sperl himself at Leibl's insistence. (F. E. Washburn-Freund, 1916, see below) Literature: Washburn-Freund, Frank E., ''Die Sammlung Stransky. Ein Vorposten deutscher Kunst in Amerika'', in: Cicerone 8, Issue 11/12 (1916), pp. 212-215, illustration 5: there incorrectly titled 'Unterschondorf'. - Diem, Eugen, Johann Sperl. Ein Meister aus dem Leiblkreis. Munich 1955, p. 55, catalogue raisonné no. 102 ''Vorfrühling im Gebirge''. - Ruhmer, Eberhard (revised), Die Münchner Schule 1850-1914. Exhibition catalogue Munich, Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen / Haus der Kunst, 28 July - 7 October, 1979. Munich 1979, p. 382, catalogue number 301 (with illustration) and coloured plate 124: there as ''entstanden in Kutterling um 1900''. - Ruhmer, Eberhard (revised), Wilhelm Leibl und sein Malerkreis. Exhibition catalogue Rosenheim, City Gallery, 1985. Rosenheim 1985, catalogue no. 140 (with illustration): there as ''Blick auf Kronwitt/Feilnbach'' and dated circa 1900. - Aigner, Fritz / Bernrieder, Josef, Mit den Malern durch den Landkreis Rosenheim. Rosenheim 1989, p. 236 and colour plate p. 237. - Moritz, Werner, J. Sperl 1840-1914. Rosenheim 1990, p. 163, catalogue raisonné no. 202 (with illustration). Fürth - 1914 Bad AiblingDer Jenbach bei Bad Feilnbach mit Blick auf die WendelsteingruppeÖl auf Lwd. 48,2 x 35,7 cm. Doubliert. Rest. Rahmen. - Diem, Eugen, Johann Sperl.
