A LARGE ICON SHOWING THE MOTHER OF GOD 'JOY TO ALL WHO GRIEVE' WITH THE COINS Russian, after 1888 Oil on wood panel. In the centre is the full-length figure of the Mother of God dressed in a white veil and flanked by two palm branches. Above her, in clouds, is the half-length figure of Christ. To either side of her are groups of suffering humans. Studding the Mother of God's garments, an area to the right of her head, and above her, are depictions of small coins. One of the later iconographic versions, 'with coins', reflects a miracle which occurred on 23 July 1888 when a bolt of lightning burned down the chapel of a glass factory in Sestroretsk near St Petersburg, where a copy of the icon was kept. During the fire 12 coins from a charity box were fused to the surface of the icon. One subsequently fell off, leaving only 11. The icon started to heal people shortly after the fire. The border emulating contemporary enamel works. Vertical crack. 53.2 x 43.8 cm.

Mittig die ganzfigurige Darstellung der stehenden Gottesmutter flankiert von Gruppen Hilfesuchender und Beduerftiger in Begleitung von Engeln. ueber das Bildfeld sind mehrere Muenzen verteilt. Am oberen Rand erscheint der segnende Christus. Der Rand ist in Art der zeitgenoessischen Cloisonné-Email-Oklade dekoriert. Die abgewandelte Darstellung der Gottesmutter 'Freude aller Leidenden' geht auf ein Wunder zurueck, das sich waehrend eines Gewitters am 23. Juli 1888 im Bethaus in St. Petersburg ereignete. Auf der Ikone wurden die Kopeken so aufgemalt, wie sie an der wundertaetigen Ikone haften blieben. Vertikale Rissbildung entlang der Brettfugen.
