Medallion circa 1740-1748 AD; farthing dies circa 1674 AD or later. Undertype, Dassier medallion: Obv: profile bust with C MARIUS legend: Rev: standing Victory with defeated foe left and piled arms to right; DEFAITE DES CIMBRES / A R 651 in two lines to exergue. Overtype, St Patrick's Coinage farthing: Obv (struck over reverse of undertype): crown David playing harp with [FLOREAT] REX legend. Rev (struck over obverse of undertype): St Patrick with patriarchal cross driving away repites; church to right with [QVIESCAT PLEBS] legend. Medallion: Kimber 40/Farthing S. 6569-6572. 13.93 grams. Property of a Kent, UK collector; acquired on UK market. Large numbers of the St Patrick's coinage were taken to America by Mark Newby in 1680/81 where they circulated as currency; perhaps this curious piece resulted from testing dies for an American origin copy of the St Patrick type, made circa 1750 AD? Worthy of further research.
