Obv: X - Y / A - M dividing by nimbate Archangel St Michael standing facing, wings spread, wearing tunic and cloak, unsheathing sword with right hand. Rev: ?????? ??C???? Â ???[ ] legend with Manuel facing at left crowned, mantled and robed holding labarum with nimbate, robed and mantled St Demetrius facing at right holding sword, both enthroned holding a model of the three-towered city between with ?(or ?)?? ??(or ?)?C? / ??? (for ???) / ??? / ??? in four lines above; old test cut at 2 oÂclock. Hallmarks and date to edge. For coin type see Sear 2138; see DO IV. 301 grams, 60mm. Property of a lady; from the collection of Simon Bendall (1937-2019 - Byzantine numismatist"). This coin design type is unique to Manual Comnenus-Ducas (1230-1237 AD) of Thessalonica; the weight, presumed to be close to the original, is very close to the Byzantine pound of 72 nomismata; it is apparently in sterling silver with XRF analysis giving 95.2-95.4% silver.
