Zhang Dali (b. 1963) Untitled (126A), 1998 Chromogenic print 38-3/4 x 58-1/4 inches (98.4 x 148.0 cm) (sight) PROVENANCE: Private collection, New York. NOTE: Zhang Dali trained at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Beijing. He is known for his sculptures, paintings and graffiti. After protesting at Tiananmen Square and surviving the ensuing massacre in 1989, Zhang fled to Italy. There he discovered graffiti as an art form of resistance. After returning to China, he was one of the only artist's producing graffiti in Beijing during the 1990s, a practice he gave up in 2006. Throughout the 1990s, Zhang Dali roamed all around Beijing and documented his graffiti-style bald head profile on crumbling buildings and walls around the city. These lonely photographs not only capture his signature ‘tag' on bombed-out areas of the Chinese capitol, they also reflect the transience and transitions of the times. He is the first artist since Jackson Pollock and Keith Haring to have his art illustrate the cover of Time magazine. His work has been exhibited internationally including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), NY; International Center for Photography, NY; Institute of Contemporary Arts, London; Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo; Brooklyn Museum, NY; and the Gwangju Biennale, Korea.
