此碗黑釉为底，碗内则以五条铁锈红色釉斑构成放射状的装饰。由于此装饰酷似被狗舔过留下的痕迹，因此人们将这类装饰形象地喻为“狗舔血”。这类带有强烈艺术感染力的作品，静中有动，活泼自然，色彩斑斓，对比鲜明。黑釉褐彩系使用含氧化铁的贫铁矿石作为绘画原料，先在施有黑釉的瓷坯上描绘图案纹饰，再入室经高温焙烧而成，花纹呈铁锈色，故又称“铁锈花”。
