Martirio de San Bartolomé group carved in ivory and wood S. XVII.
The group consists of two exempt figures. St. Bartholomew with his arms tied together by the wrists, raised above the head that hooks to one of the branches of a tree and to the foot of the tree a young man with his hands tied and joined in a gesture of prayer.
The figure of St. Bartholomew is impressive in terms of anatomical treatment and expressiveness, bringing together the baroque ideals of religious exaltation, through physical and emotional suffering and forced postures of the body. The results of martyrdom are accurately described, the cut of the skin being seen by the neck. A part of the skin hangs and curls on a tree branch and another part hangs from the torso forward, the inert form of the hand being visible on both. The skinned torso shows the exposed muscles with great accuracy. The face has also been carved with realism with a gesture of pain that is enhanced by the detailed work of the open mouth where they have been carved to the teeth. The other figure with different proportions and greater softness in the anatomical treatment does not seem the same hand and could have been placed in that place replacing what should have been an executioner.
Some faults and restorations.
Saint Bartholomew can be related to. Saint Sebastian attributed to Jacobus Agnesius Louvre Museum, Saint Sebastian at the Liechtenstein Museum in Vienna signed Adam Leinckardt whose authorship has been questioned, relating it to Agnesius by Eike Schmidt and Martyrdom of San Bartolomé in the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum, in Albi.
