Teapot and milk jug by KARL (BORROMÄUS) BERTHOLD, german approx. 1932/35 , silver 900, pure embossment. The artist and goldsmith Karl Berthold is said to be one of the most talented gold and silversmiths of the20th century. His outstanding craftmanship made him a master of his craft. He designed the sacred art according to the art deco. His craftmanships are said to be the reference of this period for expression, technical refinement and shimmering sheen. The Diocesan Museum Limburg dedicated him an exhibition in 2017 called 'Goldsmith for god and devil', because of his barely simultaneous works for the catholic church on the one hand and representatives of the national socialism on the other. One of his sacred masterpieces is the St. Bartholomew shrine, that was made for the imperial cathedral St. Bartholomew Frankfurt in 1929. Both objects offered here are forged in one piece of silver. The surfaces are refined in the finest hammer finish and offer a glistening and vivid glance. Die pressed sphere shape is stressed by the 8-fold vertical and parallel passing parcelling. The double handles with its 3- fold structures are reminiscent of aspiring fountains, that are differentiated by their inlays made of deer antler. The ornaments with their 3-fold circles in quarter cycle arrangement as well as the waved cornucopias, suggesting the archaic water and mother symbolism. That makes a pot and a jug barely sacred objects, that reflecting the norms of the spiritual and western culture to connoisseurs. A similar set is documented and pictured 'Karl Berthold ein deutscher Goldschmied' by Adolf Feulner, publisher E.A. Seemann/Leipzig, h. approx. 13/8.5 cm, diam. approx. 16/9 cm, manufacturers brands: KB ligated, K.BERTHOLD. and 900, jug with inner gilding, lid with hinge and ornamented steam hole
