2nd-3rd century AD. A bronze mount with the goddess Venus (Greek Aphrodite) seated upon a dolphin, holding her long hair, ring mount beneath; possibly a chariot mount. 57 grams, 56mm (2 1/8"). Private collection, home counties, UK; acquired before 1980. Venus, the goddess of love, stands nude, grasping her hair, the dolphin under her supports the figure and alludes to the goddess's birth from the sea.
