1485-1509? AD. Obv: facing bust with open crown and +hEnRICV DI GRA REX aberrant legend. Rev: long cross and pellets dividing CIVI TAS LOn DOn legend for London mint. S. ?; N. ?; Withers ?0.42 grams.Found Romney Marsh, Kent area, 2000s. This coin is enigmatic; the legend form is not seen for Henry IV, V or VI (which all read +hENRIC REX AnGL) nor do any of the published coins of Henry VII show this legend and the form hEnRICV is aberrant being neither hEnRIC or hEnRICVS. It perhaps has most affinity with the open crown issues of Henry VII although the weight at 0.42 grams is heavy for this series; the initial mark seems to be a cross with the lower arm slightly tapered so perhaps a short cross fitchée (which is seen for Henry VII); possibly a contemporary copy? An interesting coin which deserves further research. [No Reserve]
