A Netherlandish stained and leaded glass armorial panel, 17th century, of elongated octagonal form, the central oval reserve with two armorials within a floral border with vignettes of Saint Jerome, Saint John the Baptist and the Virgin Mary respectively, above a further oval cartouche with inscription and dated 1619 (), with further surrouding reserves with amorini, masks and swags, 111cm high overall including loops to top of the frame, 53.5cm wide The armorial with three 'rice plants' as well as the inscription to the centre of this panel indicate a link to the family of Herman van der Ryst (before 1550-1619), musician, composer and courtier, whose activities are recorded in Hasselt, present-day Belgium, just south of the Dutch border. His marriage to Lucia Gielkens, who is also named, is documented in 1608. The present panel may have possibly been a gift of the couple to Herman's son, a pastor, who is also named in the inscription.Provenance: Property from a Private Collection
