Description

Late 3rd-2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of ten seals with various shapes and designs, including seven accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state: (U-503) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 16 x 17 x 18mm. This has a nearly round flat face, and back which rises to a stalk handle with oval pierced loop. The design on the face is not really clear, but may depict a recumbent winged monster. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1800 B.C. The back is in good condition, but the face less so.'; (T-226) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 12 x 13 x 21mm. This has a round flat face and sides that rise steeply to a pierced loop handle. The design on the face is linear, consisting of two rough crescents based on the rim and connected in the middle, and a single short filling stroke. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1800 B.C. It is covered with incrustation, which could be removed, and is generally in good condition save for a worn down outer rim.'; (T-188) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 22.5 x 22 x 24mm. This has a round, flat face, and a back which rises steeply to an oval pierced handle, now broken. The design on the face consists of a pattern of raised lines: a crescent and a V-shape based on the outer rim, two short straight and three curving lines in addition. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1700 B.C. There is some incrustation on the surface which could be removed. The metal appears to be in good condition, and save for the damaged handle the whole piece is in good state of preservation.'; (R-778) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 21 x 20 x 21mm. This has a round flat face, and convex back rising to a stalk handle on which is a pierced top. The design shows a central main motif surrounded by smaller motifs round the edge. The central motif is linear and may be a stylized representation of a lizard, but this is not certain. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1800 B.C. It is covered with incrustation, which could be removed, and is in fair condition.'; (B-22) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 21 x 22 x 22mm. This has a round flat compartmented face, and a solid back which rises to a pierced knob handle. The face has a linear pattern consisting of three identical motifs starting from the rim: like inverted Vs with a curling line from the tip. This is a seal from west central Asia, from the Bronze Age, probably dating to c. 2000-1500 B.C. There is some corrosion on the surface which could be removed, but the metal is in very good condition.'; (U-309) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 18 x 15.5 x 21mm. This had, when complete, a round flat face and flat back with stalk handle mounted on the back with pierced loop on top. The design was achieved with curving lines, but is now not sufficiently preserved to be grasped. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2100-1800 B.C. About half the face is now missing, otherwise the piece is in good condition. The design may have consisted of snakes.'; (T-848) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 16 x 16 x 27mm. This has a round flat face, short vertical edges, and a slightly convex back in the middle of which is a tall stalk handle ending in a round loop. The design on the face consists of a dot within two concentric circles. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2200-1800 B.C. The edge is a little damaged at one point, otherwise the piece is in good condition.' 112 grams total, 17-24mm (3/4-1"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection numbers R-778, T-188, T-226, U-503, B-22, U-309, T-848, U-126, U-227, U-229, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s.
