Cretaceous Period, 100-93 million years BP. A fossil Carcharodontosaurus saharicus, African T-rex, showing serrated edges. 9.5 grams, 41mm (1 1/2"). From an old Lincolnshire collection; acquired during the 1980s; from Tegana formation, Sahara Desert, Morocco. Carcharodontosaurus was a gigantic carnivorous carcharodontosaurid dinosaur that lived around 100 to 93 million years ago, during the late Albian to early Cenomanian stages of the mid-Cretaceous Period. It was discovered to be the second largest predatory dinosaur, larger than Tyrannosaurus and Giganotosaurus, but not as large as Spinosaurus. The Carcharodontosaurus is named after the shark genus Carcharodon (from the Greek karcharo meaning 'jagged' or 'sharp'), odonto meaning 'teeth' and sauros, meaning 'lizard': 'jagged-toothed lizard' or 'sharp-toothed lizard'.
