Titled: "Companions" on plaque and in pencil on the back. A monumental oil on canvas by an important early Milwaukee painter and etcher in the Munich realist style, Frank Enders studied at the Munich Academy from 1879 to 1884. Upon his return to Milwaukee, he set up a studio and became active in the Milwaukee Art Association. In 1889, he toured the West for several months and painted depictions of Indian villages and ceremonies. From 1891 to 1894, he did more travel, which included painting murals in St. Louis; spending time in Omaha, Nebraska; and working in Chicago and New York. By 1895, he was back in Milwaukee, where in 1900, he became one of the founders of the Society of Milwaukee Artists. His painting subjects included portraits, figures, and regional scenery.
