This lot consists of two complete cases and one partial case with manufacturer’s labels for the cases. The octagonal case was manufactured by Littlefield, Parsons & Co. in 1857, the smaller reddish brown case was manufactured by Samuel Peck around 1854, and the partial case was manufactured by Scovill and has an ambrotype of a woman’s portrait inside the oval. The Littlefield piece has a thermoplastic case and an embossed cover featuring a couple playing chess, and it measures 2 1/2 x 3 in. wide (Krainik 580, The Chess Players). The Peck piece is a Union case and measures 2 1/16 x 1 7/8 in. wide and has a loose hinge inside (Krainik 626, Vase of Flowers). Samuel Peck patented the first thermoplastic case in New Haven, Connecticut in 1854, and this is an early example of a Peck case. The Scovill case has a sixteenth plate and measures 2 x 1 13/16 in. wide, with a geometric cross on the back cover (Krainik 650, Scroll). Scovill was located in Waterbury, Connecticut and bought out Peck in 1860. Clifford Krainik was a leading authority on Civil War era cases.
