This lot consists of three thermoplastic cases with ambrotypes. The first case is black with Kinsley and Parker exterior hinges. The image is a sixteenth plate, and the embossed covers are decorated with an oval and border reminiscent of the entrance to a mausoleum, and the the motif is repeated on front and back (Krainik 633, Scroll). The amber velvet lining has light wear, and cases with Kinsley and Parker hinges are difficult to find. The case has a snug clasp. There are slight chips at two corners on the back, and the case was probably made by Wadhams Manufacturing in the late 1850's and measures 2 1/8 x 1 7/8 in. wide. Kinsley and Parker were located in Stoughton, Mass. and were granted a patent for these hinges in 1858. The round hinges were designed to provide less strain and a stronger connection between the front and back covers of thermoplastic cases from this time period. The second case features an ambrotype of a gentleman wearing a suit, vest, and dark bow-tie. The ambrotype is a ninth plate, and the embossed covers feature a simple geometric pattern that is repeated on front and back (Krainik 493, Scroll / Geometric). The velvet lining is soft and pliable, and the case has a snug clasp. The case was made by S Peck in the 1850’s and measures 3 1/16 x 2 5/8 in. wide. The third case shows an ambrotype of a woman in a thin-waisted dress and a fancy hat. The ambrotype is a ninth plate, and the embossed covers feature a decorative motif that is repeated on front and back (Krainik 505, Scroll). The velvet lining has wear and the covers have tiny nicks along the edges. The case has a snug clasp and was made in the 1850’s by Littlefield Parsons, and it measures 2 15/16 x 2 1/2 in. wide.
