This lot has two thermoplastic cases made by Holmes, Booth, and Hayden in the 1850.s The first case has a daguerreotype of a young woman in a gingham or plaid dress. The daguerreotype is a ninth plate and the image is hand-colored. The embossed covers feature a profile of Lady Liberty, and this motif is repeated on front and back (Krainik 367, Profile of Liberty). The ruby velvet lining has light wear, the case has a snug clasp and measures 3 x 2 9/16 in. wide. The second case features ambrotype of a baby girl in a period dress. The ambrotype is a ninth plate, and the embossed covers feature a scroll and a floral border, and this motif is repeated on front and back covers (Krainik 449, Scroll / Floral). The velvet lining has some wear, and the case has a snug clasp and measures 3 x 2 9/16 in. wide.
