Description
Translation provided by Youdao
This is a thermoplastic union case with a daguerreotype of a gentleman wearing a suit, vest, and bow-tie. The daguerreotype is a sixth plate and hand-colored. The embossed covers feature a profile of George Washington, and the image is repeated on front and back of the covers (Krainik 103, Profile of George Washington). The image of Washington was based on a bust by Houdon. The ruby velvet lining is very attractive, and the clasp is snug. There is a nick in the top right corner of the case, but still a hard-to-find piece. The case was made by Critchlow in the 1850’s and measures 3 3/4 x 3 1/2 in. wide, and a rare piece.
